What is the news in the Rebirthing and Breathwork world?

item 1 COME TO A BREATHWORK CONFERENCE?

The National and International conferences are a great opportunity to meet like minded people. The ranges in types of breathwork are vast. The one common factor is conscious breathing as opposed to automatic breathing. At the conferences we all participate in one another’s workshops and breathwork experiences. It gives an opportunity to share, validate and get feedback on the specific style and approach we have chosen or make some changes. Apart from that each participant is a specialist in something. So its a chance to experience the expertise of others.

One of the main features of the Australian Conference, held each November and the International conference held in June/July, is that participants offer their services to the group rather than bringing in paid speakers or facilitators. There is so much expertise it becomes an issue which workshop to attend.

Breathwork: An Additional Treatment Option for Depression and Anxiety?

Lloyd Lalande, Matthew Bambling, Robert King and Roger Lowe

Journal of Contemporary Psychotherapy, Online First™, 1 March 2011

Abstract from Lloyd

Breathwork is an increasingly popular experiential approach to psychotherapy based on the use of a specific breathing technique, however, claims of positive mental health outcomes rely on anecdotal clinical evidence. To ascertain the likely efficacy of breathwork this review clarifies the approach and its theoretical assumptions and examines relevant empirical research relating to breathing inhibition, suppression of inner experience, and possible neurological and physiological effects. Additionally, research into mindfulness-based psychotherapy and yoga breathing-based interventions with comparable features to breathwork are examined. Findings suggest qualified support for the key theoretical assumptions of a three component breathwork model, referred to as Integrative Breathwork Therapy (IBT), and its possible utility in the treatment of anxiety and depression. Further research aimed at exploring specific efficacy of this approach for these disorders may yield a useful additional treatment option utilising a different process of change to existing treatments.

Integrative Breathwork Therapy as a treatment for depression and anxiety – by Lloyd

The practice of psychotherapy in Australia is currently experiencing significant professionalization and at the same time mainstream mental health is increasingly embracing alternative approaches to healing. To facilitate the acceptance of Breathwork into mainstream mental health, Lloyd Lalande has developed Integrative Breathwork Therapy and is currently undertaking research into the effectiveness of this approach at the Queensland University of Technology.

Lloyd has searched for the most potent and simple way the power of breathwork could be used to reduce the symptoms of anxiety and depression. He has selected some basic elements so experienced mental health workers can offer some techniques to benefit their clients. IBT is a technique now being used to trial reductions of the symptoms from abnormal experience of life to normal.

The breathwork community is glad to hear that parts of breathwork can benefit more people who are suffering with mental health issues.

In its full application, Breathwork is for individuals who want to transform their experience of normal to extraordinary – to transform and evolve consciousness

This is the experience of many clients working with breathworkers who offer full sessions and training. The benefits for wholeness of mind and body are often behind clients starting up breathwork. However most clients long for the transformative side of breathwork – from the mundane to the transpersonal… the path of evolution of consciousness
